0.3 What Sleep, Shut Down, and Restart Mean
Read by Jack. Pressing play on a video in the library loads YouTube’s player, and YouTube counts that play. What sleep, shut down and restart each do to your agent, and how Archie can wake the computer for a routine.
How to set up Archie to wake your computer for a routine
- On a Mac, setting it up asks for your password once, because only an administrator of a Mac may schedule a wake. The Mac asks for it in its own box: Archie never sees what you type.
- On Windows, setting it up is one press. Windows lets you schedule a wake for your own computer, so there is nothing to approve. On some laptops the power plan has to allow wake timers, and the Routines card names the presses that change it.
- Archie wakes a sleeping computer. A computer that is shut down stays shut down.
- To open Archie when you sign in: Settings, then How Archie looks and opens, then Open Archie at login. It starts off.

What happens to my agent when my computer sleeps, shuts down, or restarts?
Sleep puts your computer on pause. Your agent pauses, too. It cannot read or answer messages while the computer sleeps. A message sent during that time may never get a reply.
Archie can wake your computer for a routine. A routine is a task set to run at a certain time, such as a summary at seven each morning. After the task, the computer can go back to sleep.
This needs a one-time setup. Some Windows laptops also need a power setting changed. The steps are below this video.
Shut down turns your computer off. Your agent stops, and someone must turn the computer back on.
Restart turns your computer off and back on. You may do this after an update. Your agent can work again after you sign in and open Archie.
Archie can open when you sign in. In Settings, turn on Open Archie at login. This setting starts off.
For regular use, keep your computer plugged in and awake, with Archie open.
