What is AI?

AI stands for artificial intelligence. You may already use it when your phone fixes a spelling mistake, your email filters out junk mail, or your map app picks a route.

Tools such as ChatGPT and Claude are a newer kind of AI. They learned patterns from a very large amount of writing. These patterns include how people answer questions, write emails, and connect ideas.

When you ask a question, the AI uses those patterns to write an answer. The answer can be useful, but it can also be wrong.

AI is not a person. It does not have feelings. It does not know about your life unless you give it that information.
