Privacy and security

Where your information goes, where your keys are kept, and how to erase it all.

On this page

Where your conversations go#

On your own AI account, what you write goes straight from your computer to that AI company, and Otian is not in the middle and keeps no copy.

  • On your computer
  • From your phone
  • Since 0.1.1
From your phone
Messages through a chat app such as Telegram cross that company's servers, and messages to Archie Mobile cross ours, locked so we cannot open them.
Limits
  • The free credits you start with, and the plan with the AI included, run on our AI account, so while you use them your messages pass through our server on the way to Anthropic.
  • Your AI company still receives what you write, and a web search runs on that company's own search service.
  • Archie still checks your plan and counts add-on installs with our server. Neither carries your conversations.
  • It does not make Archie HIPAA or GDPR compliant, because what you write still goes to a cloud AI company.

No analytics, and crash reports you can turn off#

Archie has no analytics service, and its version check-in and its crash and error reports carry your account ID but never anything you wrote, received, or asked for.

  • On your computer
  • From your phone
  • Since 0.1.3
Where it is
In Settings, under Privacy, the Send crash reports switch, with a list of what it sends.
How to use it
  1. Open Settings and choose Privacy.
  2. Turn off Send crash reports.
From your phone
Archie Mobile has no analytics, crash reporting or advertising code in it.
Limits
  • It is on until you turn it off. Off sends nothing more and deletes anything waiting to be sent.
  • Reports carry your account ID, so they are not anonymous.
  • An error that keeps happening sends its error line, and for an add-on, its name and the tool that failed.
  • Your answer to How did you hear about Archie? is sent only when you press one, and this switch does not cover it.

The update check#

Archie checks for updates with a plain request that carries no version number, nothing identifying your computer, and no account.

  • On your computer
  • Since 0.1.1
Where it is
In Settings, under Updates.
Limits
  • GitHub and Cloudflare, which serve the update file, see your computer's internet address and the time of the check.

Where your keys are kept#

The keys you save for AI companies and services are kept in your computer's built-in password store, where we have no way to read them.

  • On your computer
  • From your phone
  • Since 0.1.1
Where it is
In Settings, under Saved keys.
From your phone
A key pasted in Archie Mobile on iPhone travels to your computer locked so we cannot open it, and is stored there the same way.
Limits
  • A key goes to its own company with each request, which is how that company knows it is you.
  • While your agent is using a key, Archie holds it in memory.

The access record#

Archie writes down each time a saved key is used and each change to who or what can reach your agents, and shows if any line was changed.

  • On your computer
  • Since 0.1.1
Where it is
In Settings, under Privacy, in Access record.
How to use it
  1. Open Settings and choose Privacy.
  2. Read Access record. Checked: nothing edited or removed means the check passed.
Limits
  • It holds those actions only. What your agent read, wrote or sent is not in it.
  • It shows a change after the fact. Someone who deletes the record and its note in the password store together leaves nothing to check.
  • It stays on your computer, so we never see it and cannot vouch for it.
  • Only Archie for Teams can export the whole record, with Export the whole record.

No list of the add-ons you install#

Adding an add-on raises its public popularity count by one, and we keep only the running total, never a list of which add-ons are yours.

  • On your computer
  • Since 0.1.1
Limits
  • The count request is signed in as you, so it is not anonymous.
  • It is sent whichever AI account you use, and stops only if you block our server.
  • Since we keep no list, a new computer needs your add-ons added again, unless you restore a backup.

What Archie Mobile asks for on your phone#

Archie Mobile uses the camera, your photos, your files and the microphone only when you press to scan, pick, take or record something.

  • On your computer
  • From your phone
  • Since 0.3.1
From your phone
This is about Archie Mobile itself, on iPhone and Android.
Limits
  • A photo, video, file or recording goes to the computer running Archie, locked so we cannot open it, and your agent shows it to its AI company when it looks.
  • On the talk screen, the microphone listens between turns until you press Done, and stops if you leave the app.
  • Archie Mobile has no analytics or advertising code.

Reset Archie#

Reset Archie erases your agents and your saved keys from your computer, disconnects every phone, and empties the phone mailbox.

  • On your computer
  • Since 0.1.3
Where it is
On the Account page, under Resetting Archie, press Reset Archie.
How to use it
  1. On the Account page, choose Resetting Archie.
  2. Press Reset Archie, type reset, and press Erase and restart.
Limits
  • It leaves the helper that wakes the computer for routines, and Open Archie at login stays as it was set.
  • Downloaded voice and speech models stay, and so does a choice to turn off error reports.
  • On Windows, the uninstaller's box Also remove my Archie data, agents, and settings is a different thing: it leaves your saved keys behind.

How long the phone mailbox keeps things#

Messages between Archie Mobile and your computer wait in a mailbox on Otian's server. The phone deletes each once read, and your computer clears leftovers a day later.

  • On your computer
  • From your phone
  • Since 0.2.5
Where it is
To empty it now, on your agent's Setup tab, under Chat app, press Archie Mobile, then Disconnect every phone.
From your phone
This is how Archie Mobile reaches the computer running Archie.
Limits
  • There is no fixed limit in days. The clearing needs your computer on and Archie running.
  • The picture of your agent the phone shows stays until you press Disconnect every phone, reset Archie, or delete your account.

What listens on your computer#

Nothing on the network can reach Archie. Only three things listen, on your computer and only while in use: a sign-in, the Google Drive picker, and the Computer control browser.

  • On your computer
  • Since 0.3.1
Limits
  • Archie's web tools refuse private and local network addresses.
  • Three things can reach local addresses: lights added on your wifi, an AI model on your computer, and the Computer control browser, which is off until you turn it on.
  • The Computer control browser is fenced only by your Blocked sites list.
