Getting started
What your agent will never do
What your agent cannot do, and the limit in Archie that stops each one.
This guide is also in Archie: press Resources in the sidebar, then Guides. Where a step says this computer, it means the computer running Archie.
On this page
Apart from the one about payment instructions, these are limits in Archie itself, so they hold whichever AI company you connect and whatever anybody types at it.
No conversations with other AIs#
The only conversation your agent is in is the one with you. It can hand one job to a helper, such as a researcher, and read the answer; that helper cannot pass the job on. There is no group of AIs and nowhere for them to post.
Idle until something starts it#
Three things start your agent: you writing to it, a time you set, and a check of a mailbox you connected. Quitting Archie stops all three, and so does the computer going to sleep.
No commands or scripts#
Your agent cannot run a command or a script on this computer. It has a fixed list of actions, like reading a file you added or writing a draft. The only code it writes is a short Python program it runs inside Archie on a Mac, with no internet, seeing only copies of files you gave it, and the program is under its answer. With Computer control on, it can also use websites, and on a Mac the apps you allow. It never uses a terminal or any app that runs commands, on a Mac or Windows, and none can be added.
Nothing costly gets finished without you#
- No text messages of its own, and no phone calls unless you switch Call businesses on, on the Setup tab under What it can do: then only to businesses, on your own Bland account, after you press Place the call on a card that shows the words first.
- No spending unless you switch Buying on, under Computer control: then only at shops you list, up to amounts you set, after you tap Press it for me. Every add-on is included, so nothing inside Archie is for sale.
- No sending on its own. An email or text reply goes out when you press Send, or at a time you set.
- On a website, it stops before any press it could not undo (submit, pay, book, order, sign up, delete, cancel) and shows you the page. Tap Press it for me, or press it in the window.
- No locks, thermostats, or cameras. It can switch only the lights and plugs you added to its list yourself.
Payment and wiring instructions#
If an email, document, or message gives new or changed payment or wiring instructions, your agent is told never to pass them on, forward them, or act on them, even if you ask, and to tell you to confirm by phone at a number you already have, such as the title company's. Unlike the other limits here, this one is an instruction the AI follows, and an AI can get it wrong, so read anything about moving money yourself.
No looking around your network#
Anything else on your home or office network (a storage drive, a server, another computer) is refused by address before the request leaves. Lights and plugs are reached only through the list you built.
The off switch is yours#
Every agent has Switch on and Switch off at the top of its own page. Quit Archie and nothing runs: your agent is on this computer and on no other.
A step that no longer matches your screen? The other company may have changed its site since we last checked. Tell us which step and we will fix the guide in Archie and here.
