Connecting your Groq account

Make a Groq API key, turn on billing (the free tier is too small), and paste the key into Archie.

This guide is also in Archie: press Resources in the sidebar, then Guides. Where a step says this computer, it means the computer running Archie.

On this page

Groq is very cheap to run. The key sits in your computer’s own password vault (the Keychain on a Mac, Credential Manager on Windows), where we have no way to read it.

Before you start#

  • An email address, or a Google or GitHub login.
  • A payment method.
  • About 5 minutes, and somewhere safe for the key.
  1. Open the Groq console keys page on this computer, and sign in or sign up.

    https://console.groq.com/keys

The key is shown only once, so one made on a phone has to be mailed to yourself.

  2. Open Groq’s billing page and add a payment method.

    https://console.groq.com/settings/billing

Skip this and the key goes green, then fails on every message: the free tier is too small for even one. Groq bills for what you use.

  3. Click Create API Key and give it a name.

    My Agent

  4. Copy the key. It starts with gsk_.

  5. Paste it in the box above.

You’ll know it worked when#

Within seconds, the AI account row reads “✓ Groq” in green.

If something goes wrong#

  • Every message says your plan is too small: billing is off. Add a payment method at https://console.groq.com/settings/billing, signed in as the account the key came from. The key itself is fine.
  • Refused right away: copy the whole key again, from gsk_ to the last character.
  • Closed the dialog before copying the key: it can’t be shown again. Make another and delete the old one.
