Give your agent a computer that stays home
Move Archie to a computer that never leaves the house, so your agent answers while your laptop is shut.
This guide is also in Archie: press Resources in the sidebar, then Guides.
Your agent runs on the computer Archie is on, so it pauses whenever that computer sleeps, shuts down, or goes in a bag. If you have a computer that can stay plugged in at home (a desktop, or an older Mac or PC you no longer carry), Archie can live there instead, and your agent answers all day and night.
What still works from there#
- Your phone, through Archie Mobile, wherever you are.
- Your chat app: Telegram, Discord, Slack, or Matrix, and iMessage when the home computer is a Mac.
- Routines and reminders, at their times, without waking anything.
- Your email, calendar, and files, once you connect them again on that computer.
Move your agent there#
- On the computer you use now, open the Account page, then Backups in the left sidebar, and press Save a backup. Save it somewhere the other computer can open, like a USB stick or your cloud drive.
- Archie then asks whether you are moving. Press Switch off the agents here, so the two computers never both answer the same message.
- Install Archie on the home computer and sign in. If it asks whether you have used Archie on another computer, press Open a backup to pick the file. If it doesn't ask, open the Account page, then Backups, and under Restore a backup press Choose a file.
- Press Restore and restart Archie. Your agents come back with their memory, skills, routines, and documents.
- Archie then lists what to connect again, because a backup never holds passwords or keys: your own AI account if you use one, your chat app, your email, your calendar, and any website your agent was signed in to. Go down the list one row at a time.
- Connect your phone again: on your agent's Setup tab, under Chat app, press Archie Mobile, then Show the code, and scan it from Archie Mobile.
- On a Mac, allow anything macOS asks for again (reading Messages, notifications, and the microphone), because those permissions belong to each computer.
Keep it on#
- Stop it sleeping while plugged in. The guide "Your agent stopped replying" has the steps for a Mac and for Windows. Only the computer has to stay awake; the screen can go dark.
- Leave Open Archie at login switched on (it is on unless you turned it off) in Archie's Settings, so a restart doesn't stop your agent.
- After an update restarts the computer, someone has to sign in to it before Archie opens again. Check on it after a big system update.
- A cable from your router is steadier than Wi-Fi, and a spot with some air around it keeps it cool.
