Connect your chat app
Connecting Discord
Create a Discord app, turn on the switch that lets it read messages, and invite it to your server.
This guide is also in Archie: press Resources in the sidebar, then Guides.
Your agent joins your Discord server as a bot, and you message it in a channel there.
Before you start#
- A Discord account and a server. No server? The first two steps make one, free.
- About 10 minutes.
- Somewhere safe for the bot token. Anyone who has it controls your bot, so paste it only into Archie.
-
Do all of this on the computer Archie is on. No server yet? In Discord, click the + on the left sidebar and choose “Create My Own” → “For me and my friends”.
Discord also runs in a browser at https://discord.com/app. Doing this here puts the token straight into Archie.
-
Give the server any name, for example:
My Agent’s Server -
Open the Discord Developer Portal:
https://discord.com/developers/applications -
Click New Application (top right). When it asks for a name, use your agent’s name:
My Agent -
Open the Bot tab (left sidebar), click Reset Token, confirm, and copy the token. Paste it into the token box on Archie’s Chat app card.
-
On that same Bot tab, turn ON “Message Content Intent” (under Privileged Gateway Intents). Without it, your bot never comes online.
-
Still on the Bot tab, under Bot Permissions, check: View Channels, Send Messages, Read Message History, Embed Links, Attach Files, and Add Reactions.
-
Open OAuth2 → URL Generator, check just the “bot” box, open the link it builds at the bottom, pick your server, and click Authorize.
-
Now message your agent in any text channel on that server. (It only replies while Archie is running on your computer.)
You’ll know it worked when#
The Discord row on Archie’s Chat app card says connected in green, and your bot is in the server’s member list. Your agent won’t answer until you claim it: message it, and it asks for the six-digit code Archie shows once the agent is started. The Claim your agent guide covers this.
If something goes wrong#
- The bot stays offline in the member list: “Message Content Intent” is off. Turn it on in the Developer Portal, save, and Archie reconnects.
- The bot never joined the server: redo the OAuth2 → URL Generator step for a fresh link, open it, pick your server, and click Authorize.
- The bot replies to nothing: Archie has to be open on your computer and the agent switched on. Check the button at the top of its page in Archie: it reads Switch off while the agent is on.
- Archie rejects the token: it was probably reset after you copied it. Click Reset Token on the Bot tab and paste the new one.
