Set up what your agent does
Giving your agent things to read
Add files your agent can read, and learn which kinds work and when it opens them.
This guide is also in Archie: press Resources in the sidebar, then Guides.
On this page
Put what you keep pasting into the chat here once: prices, policies, a handbook, meeting notes. Your agent reads a file when a question needs it, and changes one only when you ask and say yes.
Documents and Lists#
- Documents: files kept as they are, in folders. Your agent reads them and never changes one on its own.
- Lists: tables it keeps up to date as you chat, like customers or orders. It adds and changes entries without asking, since you can undo any of it, and you can edit them too.
The Knowledge tab also has Memory (its own guide) and How you write (a few things you wrote, so drafts sound like you).
Documents you can add#
PDFs, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, text, Markdown, CSV, and other plain-text formats such as JSON, HTML and YAML. Up to 10 MB each, and as many as you like. Files added without a folder go in General.
The words are pulled out when you add a file; open it in the list to see what came through. The older .doc, .xls and .ppt can’t be opened, so Save As the newer kind first.
When your agent changes a file#
It says in one line what it would change, and waits for your yes. Then it sends the file back in the chat and keeps the old version beside it. It changes only what you asked, so formatting and formulas survive. It can’t change a PDF; ask for a new file instead.
When your agent opens a file#
It never reads them all. It opens a file only when a question calls for it, choosing by filename, folder and description, so name them clearly. It reads from the top and stops after a while, so put what matters first, or split a long file.
Files that arrive on their own#
- Documents you send in your chat app go to the chat-inbox folder. Past 50, your agent clears the oldest and tells you. Files you added yourself are never touched.
- Meeting transcripts and video notes land in the meetings and videos folders when a skill makes them.
Test with one document#
Add a document and ask something it answers. A good reply quotes the detail back. If it’s vague, rename the file to something a stranger would guess, and ask again.
